HS.006 — So-Fi

Hi So-Fi, to start, can you present yourself in a few words?

Hi, I'm So-Fi, a French DJ and producer based in Berlin for the past 8 years. I co-organise a party series called Superluminal, alongside my partners Matthias and Ancut

What was the purpose and idea behind this mix?

Every time I record a mix, the idea and purpose remain the same. I try to share part of my musical world in a personal way. I select each record based on how it makes me feel when listening to it, and then I combine them in a manner that makes sense to me.

The approach is rather personal and emotional, it's based on my connection to the sound and how I process it. The tricky part is to keep hoping it will be found by people able to understand and appreciate it. I guess it's a way to express myself and an attempt at connecting with others.

This mix is particularly inspired by how I like certain sounds, and how they make me feel. It’s also about what’s on my mind lately and my perception of the world at the moment.

What are your main influences at the moment?

I am mostly influenced by my personal life, my travels, and the connections I make with ravers, collectives, event organisers, and other artists. I get inspired by many things and people in my everyday life.

Lately, I have been trying to retrace my musical roots to understand how they shaped the person I became. Going back to my musical past, what I have been listening to throughout the years, finding similarities with the music I play today.

In terms of music genres, I don't restrict myself much. My selection is based on emotions rather than logic, and I trust my intuition to build my sets. It's about what I have inside my guts, my secrets, the joy, the sadness, the love and support I receive.

I’m lucky to share my life and home with DJ & producer Matthias (owner of Superluminal recordings) and we can exchange daily about music on a deep level.

Organising parties and showcases together in Berlin and around the world is shaping how I evolve as a person and artist. I see the community around the party growing with great people feeling aligned with our values. It’s very impactful to gather people who care about the same things, but also care about each other.

Do you want to highlight a specific track of your mix?

I like every track in this mix; it’s about listening to them together and the story behind the selection. I wanted to achieve a certain continuity in the mix that activates some areas in my brain and makes me feel a certain way.

I would highlight the fact that there are records from different decades and genres blended in this mix. It’s always interesting for me to mix new and old releases without making it sound too obvious.

How do you prepare/project yourself into your mix in a club?

As I use only vinyl records in my sets, the most important thing is to fill up my record bag in a way that will allow me to take different directions on the spot depending on the situation, the sound system, and the energy of the crowd. I always have an idea of what I will play, but I need a part of improvisation. It’s about the situation I have in front of me and what I have to express. I would say it’s a mix of preparation and improvisation.

Do you want to say a few words about your upcoming projects?

I’m working on my music production which I exclusively play in my sets at the moment. My next project is to release my first EP.

Meet So-Fi at Trabendo in Paris, on April 25, 2025.
